How Nutrition Can Support Clients’ Mental Health

This interactive training explores the connection between brain health and diet, providing tools for providers to incorporate nutrition into treatment plans. Hultin covers ways diet influences mental health from mood, memory and concentration to specific diagnoses such as anxiety/depression, ADHD, and schizophrenia. Participants will learn how to have a culturally responsive conversation about nutrition that respects all body shapes and accounts for a range of food access, lifestyles, and budgets.

Years ago Ginger Hultin was a personal trainer at a big Seattle gym. She loved working with clients but trainers had to meet sales goals selling supplements. Her manager told her to put “nutritionist” on her business cards because “anyone can say they are one”.

Unfortunately there is no license for dietitians in Washington State so the public is not protected from people who have no nutrition training but practice anyway. That didn’t sound right to her so she did some research and… quit! Instead, Ginger spent two years at the celebrated naturopathic university, Bastyr, earning her Masters of Science degree in nutrition, continuing on to become a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist. She moved to Chicago to complete her dietetic internship at the rigorous Edward Hines Jr Veterans Hospital and ended up staying in the city for five years working in clinical practice.

Now she lives in Seattle, writing about nutrition and health for a variety of platforms, traveling around the country and the world (headed to Kuwait next!) for nutrition speaking engagements and is a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Ginger specialize in plant-based, low-carb and ketogenic diets, supplements, nutrition for fitness, cardiovascular health (to get that cholesterol down!), diabetes prevention and management, balancing hormones and lowering inflammation, lab interpretation, integrative oncology and cancer prevention and making food prep/cooking easy and fun.
