Digging Deeper into CBT: A Refresher Course

In this 2.25-hour refresher course, participants will briefly review the fundamentals of CBT (e.g., what is involved in a CBT approach to assessing/analyzing a client’s presenting problems) and then will engage in focused practice of how to implement three core CBT techniques: cognitive restructuring, behavioral activation, and exposure. This is an interactive training so participants will have the opportunity to learn in a variety of ways including lecture, demonstrations, discussions, and experiential role-play activities designed to give them a richer understanding of the use of core CBT techniques.
 

At the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  1. List the steps involved in cognitive restructuring

  2. Describe how to implement behavioral activation

  3. Explain the rationale and procedures used in exposure therapies

  4. Discuss how mindfulness-based interventions (“3rd wave CBT) complement traditional cognitive-behavioral interventions (“2nd wave CBT”)

  5. Explain how to ethically practice CBT through awareness of factors such as cultural differences and implicit biases

Digging Deeper into MI: A Refresher Course

In this 2.25-hour “refresher” course, participants will briefly review the fundamentals of MI (including the MI spirit, the four processes of MI, and the core microskills) and then engage in focused practice on how to use the MI microskills to evoke and strengthen a client’s own motivation to change. Areas of emphasis include how to thoughtfully use reflective listening to move a conversation toward change, and how to flexibly employ MI-consistent communication skills to respond to sustain talk or “stuckness” in the change process. In this interactive training, participants will have the opportunity to learn in a variety of ways including lecture, demonstrations, discussions, and experiential role-play activities designed to give them a richer understanding of the use of motivational interviewing in diverse settings.
